The best of the best of the 2010 Golden Globes

District Couture is bringing you commentary of the 2010 Golden Globe Awards. This is my absolute favorite awards show and in my opinion, this is the venue where celebrities tend to chose the best, more "real" looks. The Oscars can get a little hairy and the SAG's just don't get enough editorial. But the Golden Globes, second to the annual MET Costume Ball, is the best red carpet fashion event of the year.

With that being said, I believe in starting on a high note. I present you Halle Berry in Kaufman Franco. I've often speculated that if the divine Miss Berry came down the red carpet in a bejeweled burlap sack she'd still be the belle of the ball. Halle is showing exactly how to do sexy and formal. 40 looks good on Halle.

Keeping with the 40 and fabulous trend, many were critical of Jennifer Aniston in this Valentino gown. I tend to think it's the sloppy sex hair more than the gown. Jennifer is a vixen in this and the high slit, something I miss from the '80s, is making a comeback and she's doing it very well!

You know how everyone thinks of Scarlett Johanssen as the ultimare sex kitten? Well she's being dethrowned as of right now, because Marion Cotilliard in Christian Dior Couture is not only a sexpot, she exudes class simultaneously. The slip seam exposes just the right amount of thigh, while the color is uber dramatic and the draping and asymetry adds the perfect amount of du jour fashion. Naked earlobes and minimal jewelry earns her a Golden Globe in fashion.

Aww Sookie, Sookie now. Anna Paquin in Stella McCartney did what Mariah Carey should have done. The color and seaquins are perfect for her youthfulness. The cap sleeves keep the plunging V-neckline tasteful. This was an equisite choice and the hair is perfectly understated for such a statement gown.

If Chloi Sevigny's prairie dress toting character on 'Big Love' had a secret secular fashion fantasy, this would be the frock she'd dream up. And I mean this as a compliment. This was another questionable choice by many, however Chloi wears this Valentino quite well. It's totally high fashion, and because she has such a thin frame, she's able to carry off all of the drama of the ruffles. It moved so beatifully on the red carpet and on stage. Kudos, Chloi.

I typically poo-poo shorter dresses at major awards shows, however, fellow 'Big Love' star Jennifer Godwin in Vionnet completely pulls it off so elegantly. The color is amazing, and she especially stands out against a sea of black and nude-ish tones. The jewlery, the bag and the sleek/sexy hair - even the umbrella, really pulls together so well. Another home run. (yes, I can mix sports anaologies with fashion...it's my blog).

Jennifer Garner, not typically known for her everyday fashion choices, always seems to choose exceptional gowns. This Atelier Versace number looks as if someone pour molten diamond-encrusted lava over her body and this is how it dried. Aside from the hair, she looks amazing.

Kate Hudson in Marchesa - another highly critiqued choice, but I love this. I'm so glad to see more of last year's matte white trend - matte white looks beatiful on so many skin tones and Kate is no exception. I'm not a fan of the earrings and I wish she would have let the train drag rather than holding it the whole time, but nonetheless, she looks absolutely stunning and the bodice oozes couture.

In a million years, you'll never guess who designed this dress. Courtney Cox did quite well in choosing this Victoria Beckham (yes, Posh Spice) gown. It's simple, yet totally stunning. The hair is perfect and her eyes absolutely sparkled on the red carpet in this gown. Glad to see 'Friends' helping each other out.

Twilight turned Up in the Air star, Anna Kendrick chose a somewhat questionable dress by Marchesa for her first red carpet appearance. Even though the sparkles plus the ruffles was a bit much, the gown looked beautiful on her. The silhouette is quite stunning on her and the hair paired well.
